The lasting part of the fix.
A trap handles today's rodents. A sealed building handles next month's. Without exclusion, a trapped house often fills again as soon as new animals find the same gaps.
The work is slow and detailed, and it is easy to get wrong. A rat will chew foam in a night, and a mouse will pass through a gap smaller than you would think. That is why materials and workmanship matter.
Where rodents get in.
Entry points cluster in predictable places. The technician checks each one and records it, so nothing is left to memory.
| Location. | Typical opening. | Typical material. |
|---|---|---|
| Roofline. | Gaps at roof edges, tile ends and gable or soffit vents. | Metal flashing, hardware cloth. |
| Foundation and slab. | Cracks and utility penetrations. | Mesh and sealant or mortar. |
| Garage. | Door corners and worn bottom seals. | Replacement seals and thresholds. |
| Pipes and wires. | Collars around penetrations. | Mesh packed and sealed. |
| Vents. | Dryer, bath and attic vent covers. | Metal screens and guards. |
How the work is done.
Sealing begins once the technician knows which animals are active and where they exit. Openings are cleared of debris, measured and covered. Mesh is fastened and sealed so it cannot be pulled out.
- Never close a hole while an animal is inside unless it has a way out.
- Use materials that resist chewing, such as metal and hardware cloth.
- Seal in layers, with mesh first and sealant to hold it.
- Keep a list of every sealed opening for the follow-up check.
Roof and wall type change the plan.
If your home has a tile roof, the gaps where tile ends meet the roof edge can be an entry route that is easy to miss from the ground. With composition roofing the weak points are more often vents and flashing. Stucco cracks and weep holes at the base of a wall can matter on either.
Whichever applies to your home, we start by looking. Materials differ by roof and wall type, and the plan says which are used where.
Cost and scope.
Prices depend on how many openings there are and how hard they are to reach. A small job may involve a few accessible gaps, while a large one may involve the roofline and require a ladder or roof access. The estimate lists the work in steps, so you can see where the cost is.
If trapping is also needed, see rodent trapping and removal. If damage needs repair afterward, rodent damage repair covers it.

Call (888) 686-4821A seasonal check you can do yourself.
Once a season, walk the outside of your house. Look at vents, door seals and the places where wires and pipes enter. If you see fresh gnawing near a repair, call early, because a small gap is easier to close than a big one.
Cleanup safety, drawn from CDC guidance
These steps follow CDC guidance on cleaning up after rodents. They are general safety practice for any household.
- Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings or nests. That can put contaminated dust in the air you breathe.
- Ventilate a shut-up space first. Half an hour of airing out is the CDC's starting point.
- Hand protection matters. Wear gloves throughout and wash your hands with soap afterward.
- Soak, wait about five minutes, then wipe. That order keeps dust down and gives the disinfectant time to work.
- Seal used paper towels and any dead rodent in a bag before disposal. Keep bare skin out of it.
- Flu-like symptoms or shortness of breath after rodent exposure are a reason to see a doctor and mention the cleanup. Health questions belong with a physician, not a pest company.

Sealing questions
Why not just use steel wool or foam?
Rodents pull steel wool out and chew through most foam. Metal, mesh and sealant last longer in an opening a rodent is testing.
Will sealing trap animals inside?
It can if done before the animals are out. That is why trapping and exit planning come first, and why you should not plug a hole yourself first.
How small is too small to seal?
Roughly a quarter inch for mice and half an inch for rats. If you can fit a pencil in the gap, treat it as an entry point.
Does sealing hurt my roof?
Done correctly it does not. Materials and methods are chosen to avoid damaging tile, shingles or flashing.
Is sealing a one-time job?
It is lasting, but check seals once a season, especially after storms or any roof work.
Sealing work by property
Sealing work is quoted house by house. Tell us whether the home has tile or composition roofing, attic vents and a tight garage door, since those decide which materials the technician brings.
